2010 Explorer 22 TDi
The first Explorer 22 we built, later upgraded with a fiberglass hard top. It ran in Wrangell, Alaska and the Stikine River delta, came back to our shop in 2023 for a complete refit, and now provides service in Gates of the Arctic National Park.
- 22 ft x 11 ft, about 1,700 lb, 1,600 lb cargo
- 84 hp VW diesel, about 40 hours since a 2017 remanufacture
- 32 mph cruise, 40 mph top, 2.2 gal per hour at 30 mph

Before you buy
Buying a used hovercraft?
A used craft can be a good buy if you know where to look. Check these before you pay, or ask us to look it over with you.
- The skirt: its hours and condition. A skirt lasts about 1,500 to 2,000 hours, and worn or torn segments mean a replacement soon.
- The hull: cracks, soft spots and old repairs, especially under the bow and along the bottom where it lands.
- Engine hours and service records.
- The lift fan and propeller: chipped or cracked blades.
- Flotation: sealed compartments that are intact and dry.
- A test run: lift, steering, stopping and a beach landing.
- Parts and support: who built it, and whether skirts and parts are still available.
